Back to school with Taylor Mackenzie - Former BSB star set to head BMW Motorrad Academy

Riders looking to up their trackday game can now call upon the services of former British Superstock 1000 champion, Taylor Mackenzie, who was recently announced as the Chief Instructor for the 2024 BMW Motorrad Performance Academy.

The Scotsman’s racing career stretches back to 2007, progressing over the years until his entry into the British Superbike Championship in 2015, where he remained a competitive force until his retirement from racing in 2021.

Commenting on the new venture, Mackenzie said: “It’s all about giving our customers the best experience on the track and helping them progress as a rider and to be more confident and safer, with in-depth tuition from our expert instructors.”

The training centre, based exclusively at Leicestershire’s Mallory Park, will open its doors from March 29 across seven dates throughout the year, with one event running each month until September.

Courses are split into two tiers, with level one pitched at riders who have minimal, or no track experience and who are looking to get to grips with the basics of short circuit riding.

For £719, the day will delve into the basic mechanics of track riding and includes on-track sessions after completing an introduction to the race circuit.

To enhance the experience, the course will also include technical briefings following each outing, as well as a classroom-based element fronted by three-time British Superbike champion Niall Mackenzie.

Experienced riders hoping to acquire more advanced skills can make use of the level two course, costing £769. This session cranks things up a notch, focusing on perfecting racing lines, efficient gear use and throttle application, in addition to advanced body positioning.

Customers can expect their journey to begin with the F900R, before progressing through to the S1000R, S1000RR and up to the range topping M1000RR – available only for those accessing the highest levels of the Performance Academy.
