WSB Jerez Test: Rea tops final day in dominating fashion

Jonathan Rea sent a warning to his rivals after dominating the second day of testing at Jerez.

The five-time champion obliterated his quickest time from the 2018 Jerez test with just over 10 minutes remaining of today’s session. His time of 1:38.397 was 0.316 quicker than the time he set 12 months ago. It was also faster than Alvaro Bautista’s lap record from this year’s race meeting.

Loris Baz put in an impressive performance to end the day in second. However, the Ten Kate Yamaha rider was still 0.883 slower than Rea.

Like the opening day, Michael Van Der Mark was third for Pata Yamaha. The Dutchman was just 0.007 slower than Baz. He encounted an oil leak in the afternoon, which caused him and two other riders to crash at turn one.

Alex Lowes also finished in the same position as yesterday, in fourth spot. Scott Redding was the leading Ducati in fifth, just over a second slower than Rea.

Tom Sykes got another 65 laps under his belt for BMW, ending the day in sixth. Toprak Razgatlioglu was unable to match his heroics of day one, finishing down in seventh.

Niccola Canepa ensured that there were four Yamaha riders in the top eight. Chaz Davies and Eugene Laverty complete the top 10.

Jonathan Rea tops WSB Jerez Test day one

Jonathan Rea topped the opening day of testing at Jerez, after narrowly overcoming the challenge of Toprak Razgatlioglu.

The reigning champion’s quickest lap-time came on his 60th lap, with the Kawasaki rider posting a 1:39.207. This was only 0.019 quicker than Razgatlioglu, who set his quickest time just before the flag fell.

Michael Van Der Mark was third after completing a staggering 98 laps for Yamaha. This was more laps than anybody else at the test.

Alex Lowes ended the day fourth on the second Kawasaki and will be pleased with the progress he has made. The former Yamaha rider was +0.573 behind Rea. He was followed by Loris Baz on the Ten Kate Yamaha machine.

Scott Redding was the top Ducati rider in sixth, just under a second slower than Rea. The reigning British Superbike champion lost some momentum in the afternoon after running on into the gravel at turn five. Tom Sykes was seventh for BMW on the team’s first outing this winter, with the second Ducati of Chaz Davies in eighth.

Niccolo Canepa was ninth, whilst Eugene Laverty completed the top 10 on his debut for BMW. The Irishman has reunited with crew chief Marcus Eschenbacher for the 2020 campaign.
