Marco Melandri pipped Jonathan Rea to the top of the times on the opening day of World Superbike action in Aragon.

The Italian was just 0.039 seconds quicker than the three-time World Champion after the day’s three practice sessions, although the third and final session was a washout as the heaven’s opened on the Spanish track.

Tom Sykes rounded out the top three ahead of winner last time out Chaz Davies while Jordi Torres, who topped the wet FP3, was fifth for MV Agusta Reparto Corse.

Alex Lowes was sixth for PATA Yamaha ahead of team-mate Michael van der Mark and Barni Ducati’s Xavi Fores.

Lorenzo Savadori earned a pass to Superpole 2 with Milwaukee Aprilia in ninth while Leon Camier, running Magneti Marelli electronics on the Red Bull Honda for the first time this weekend, rounded out the top ten.
