When Superstock 600 champions Gino Rea graduated to the World Supersport Championship onboard the Intermoto Czech Honda, no one could have predicted that he would be fifth in the standings after the opening five rounds.

But due to five strong and consistent rides the 20 year old from Surrey is making his mark on the series and opening the paddocks eyes to what a talent he can become in the future.

After securing his best race result of sixth at Valencia, Rea is now setting his targets even higher and although he wasn’t able to replicate the result once again proved his credentials in Monza.

Speaking to MCN, he said: “I’m actually frustrated because I feel that I keep getting involved in the wrong battle on track. I seem to end up in a fight that’s holding me back instead of dragging me on.

“When I was behind Pirro and Fujiwara I felt comfortable and that I had the pace to stay with them. It’s annoying because I truly believe I could have stayed with them. But Chaz came past and I couldn’t get him back and make the pass stick.

“I think he was struggling mid corner and on the exit, but he was really good on the brakes and as soon as he got in front of me I couldn’t get him back and stay ahead long enough to go with the other group.”

2It’s not the result I wanted, but its still good for the championship and I’m up to fifth in the standings which is a bit unexpected!”
