Phillip Island WSB: Checa stays on top in second qualifying

Carlos Checa remained in provisional pole position during the second qualifying session at Phillip Island despite not improving on his first qualifying lap time. Like Checa both Michel Fabrizio and Leon Haslam maintained their position in second and third place respectively and like Checa neither man improved on their day one lap time.

Cal Crutchlow was the biggest improver jumping up from tenth to fourth onboard his fast improving factory Yamaha R1. Crutchlow finished ahead of Sylvan Guintoli with James Toseland in sixth.

Toseland who only completed 13 laps due to the wrist injury sustained when he high sided yesterday dug deep to set his impressive time.

Speaking to MCN, Toseland said: “I had four pain killing injections before I even went out but only managed one lap because it was hurting so much. I had to see the doctor again and get another injection in a different place on my wrist and that helped. There is no bruising or swelling but it’s causing me a lot of pain at the moment.”

Brit Jonathan Rea ended the session seventh ahead of an impressive Chris Vermeulen on the factory Kawasaki. Aprilia man Leon Camier upped his pace significantly to take ninth with Shane Byrne in 12th, unable to improve following his huge crash and Tom Sykes in 15th.
