Donington WSB: Spies whitewashes race two

1 of 1

Ben Spies has taken his second race win at Donington Park coming over the line 6.622 seconds clear of Leon Haslam who took second place for the Stiggy Honda team and his British fans.

Michel Fabrizo on the Xerox Ducati took third keeping another Brit, Shane Byrne off the podium.

The title chase is now on as Noriyuki Haga crashed out of second place in the race on the fourth lap when he suffered a nasty highside at Coppice.

With Haga not scoring and Spies taking away a full 25 points, his title lead is now down to just 14 points.

This was a much better outing for the British riders with six finishing in the top ten. The race was full of crashes with Shinya Nakano, Jamie Hacking, Haga, Carlos Checa, and David Checa all falling.

Both Jonathan Rea and Max Biaggi crashed and remounted to finish in 15th and 21st.

Fabrizio said: “I got a bad start but I recovered but not so much as I lost a lot at the start. It was a great battle with Haslam and Shakey, it was difficult to fight as they rode very hard.”

Haslam said: “The last few rounds have been tough as they were new tracks. I’ve been looking forward to coming home and racing in front of British fans.

“I struggled in both races so to get second I’m over the moon. I was behind Biaggi and Haga when they crashed so I hope they are ok. Ben had good pace and I said he was the man to beat.

“The last few laps I rode really defensively. I’m glad to bring it home ahead of the factory lads and in front of the fans.”

Spies said: “It was a good race and I had a gap so I was comfy with the pace. It felt longer as I had to concentrate.

“I was looking at the battle for second place and thinking ’that looks like fun,’ I nearly ran off the track as I missed my braking marker. With a bit gap it is hard to concentrate but I’m back in the points now, it was unfortunate for Nori that he crashed.

“I have a few weeks off before Brno so I just need to keep it up. It has been a good year, I’m having a blast, I never thought it would go this good. I don’t want to think too much about it as there are a few more races to go.”
