WSB America: Spies takes race two win, Rea third

Ben Spies secured his second race win of the day to move to within 53 points of series leader Noriyuki Haga. As in race one, Spies made another blistering start and set an unmatchable pace from the opening lap. The American set a new circuit lap record on lap two to pull clear of the chasing pack and when Ten Kate Honda rider Carlos Checa crashed out, Italian Michel Fabrizio was the only rider capable of matching the pace.    

 
Spies said:
I wanted to keep Michel pushing, but do enough to keep him out of my draft, so every time he would make a tenth on me, I’d put a tenth on him and just keep him right there. It was a tough race and when he’s riding that well you can’t sit there. You’ve got to be consistent, not panic and slowly try and make a gap. There were five laps where I didn’t even look at my pit board, because I knew he was going to do whatever I was doing. Michel is really good at following, for sure. I just looked at my lap timer and kept stacking the laps together with no mistakes and with a few to go I broke him.”

Third place went to Brit Jonathan Rea who rode another impressive race to fend of challenges from Noriyuki Haga, Ryuichi Kiyonari, Max Biaggi and Leon Haslam. Haslam made a late charge for the final podium position but crashed his Stiggy Honda after hitting a kerb at the final chicane.

Rea said:
Every lap I was watching the big screen out of the last turn to see who it was behind me. I knew I had a little bit of a gap, but for me I had to ride as slow as I could for third place. We had a big problem with the front on entry to the corners so I used the power of my machine just on the straights, the guys put a great bike together and I’d like to thank them all for their efforts.”
