USA World Superbikes: Troy Bayliss on top and on the pace stateside

Xeros Ducati rider Troy Bayliss took little time to acclimatise himself to the all new Miller Motor sports circuit and claimed provisional pole position with a best lap of 1min 50.710secs.

Bayliss’ lap time set after 21 laps is currently just under a second slower than the American Superbike lap record set in 2006 by reigning champion Ben Spies.

A determined Carlos Checa started his weekend well after his poor results last time at Monza to secure second in front of early pace setter Troy Corser onboard his Yamaha Italia R1.

Frenchman Regis Laconi used his aggressive style to hustle his PSG-1 Kawasaki around the fast flowing circuit. Laconi put his early pace down to learning the track using the SBK 08 Xbox game.

Suzuki men Fonsi Nieto and Yukio Kagayama made a strong start to finish fifth and sixth respectively with Monza race winner Noriyuki Haga in seventh.

The surprise results of the session came from Japan’s Shuhei Aoyama onboard the Alto Evolution Honda in eighth, with slow starters Ryuichi Kiyonari down in 14th and championship contender Max Neukirchner way down in 20th spot.
 
First qualifying for Sunday’s two races takes place at 2.15pm local time (7hours behind UK time)
