Bayliss wins race one at soggy Silverstone

1 of 1

Troy Bayliss won the first World Superbike race of the day at Silverstone in treacherous conditions.

The Australian battled all the way with Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser taking the lead from pole position into the first corner.

Corser did swap the lead with his fellow Australian on lap four, but Bayliss retook the lead on lap 10.

Haga looked like he would get the better of Bayliss in the dying laps, but the Ducati man held on to leave Haga in second with Corser securing the final podium spot.

The heavy rain, which has been falling since early morning took it’s toll from the start with Alto Evolution Honda’s Karl Muggeridge not making it past the first corner.

Britain’s James Toseland was perhaps the biggest casualty of the appalling conditions as he crashed out on lap four from fourth position in the Ireland section. But the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider was the comeback kid of the race as he clawed his way back to eighth place from the 18th he fell down to after his crash with apparently only a hole in his fairing to show for his troubles.

This has meant the Brit has kept his place at the top of the championship standings, although Noriyuki Haga and Troy Bayliss have closed the gap.

Other fallers were Max Neukirchner, Josh Brookes, Jakub Smrz, Yukio Kagayama, Fonsi Nieto and Ruben Xaus.
