WSB teams glue tyres in place

WSB teams are having to take drastic measures to stop their rear tyres spinning on the rim and have even resorted to gluing them in place.

So far this year both Troy Corser and James Toseland have missed out on podium places due to their rear tyres turning on the rim.

Although the tyre itself spinning doesn’t cause a major issue, the real problem arises when the wheel has weight on it to balance the tyre.

This is because if it spins then the weight ends up in the wrong place, which then causes vibration and chatter for the riders.

Toseland’s crew chief, Kor Veldman, explained: “The best solution we’ve tried is to not only put the tyre on dry, but to degrease the tyre with brake cleaner before it goes on to make sure it’s totally clean.

“We also keep a close eye on how much balancing weight there is on the wheel when it comes back from Pirelli. If the tyre is for a race and it has any more than 15 grams on it we send it back.”
