Michael Rutter is set to race a brand new Yamaha YZF-R6 on the roads this year provided by former team-mate and close friend Stephen Thompson who suffered life-changing injuries in a crash at the 2015 North West 200.

Thompson was seriously injured in a crash on Mill Road in the 2015 Superstock race, which left him in hospital with a collapsed lung, bleeding on the brain and multiple fractures.  The Northern Irishman would later have part of his arm amputated as a result of his injuries.

Under the banner of Thompson Plastering, Rutter will compete in the Supersport class with the team at both the North West 200 and Isle of Man TT. Thompson is also hoping to run the bike at the Ulster and Manx Grand Prix with another rider yet to be confirmed.

A statement from Thompson read: “Thompson Plastering (myself and Paul Thompson ) are looking forward to supplying Michael Rutter with a new R6 Yamaha for the Isle of Man TT and hopefully the North West 200.

“Michael’s experience goes before him with the wins and podium finishes he has achieved at these races. The bike will also be raced at the Ulster GP and possibly the Manx GP and other selected races with another. If there is any person or business interested in helping out the team please contact us. Here’s to an enjoyable season ahead.”

Rutter is expected to remain with the SMT Bathams BMW squad for the 1000cc classes and is also rumoured to be set for a return to the MCE British Superbike Championship.
