Ulster GP: Hickman dominates opening day

Peter Hickman completed a whitewash of the opening day’s practice at the 2017 Ulster Grand Prix by placing quickest in the joint Superbike/Superstock session to close the day.

The Smiths BMW rider took the session lead at the mid-way point despite being on his Superstock-spec machine while most his rivals were out on Superbikes. He’d then go out on the BMW S1000RR Superbike and further up the ante with the quickest lap of the week so far at 3.21’158 (132.453mph).

Bruce Anstey was again second quickest (when discounting Hickman’s Superstock time) on the Padgetts RC213V-S despite only completing four laps before calling it a day. His team-mate Conor Cummins was third on the Fireblade.

Michael Dunlop showed improvement on this morning’s pace to place fourth quickest for Bennetts Suzuki ahead of Dean Harrison and Tyco BMW new boy Dan Kneen.

William Dunlop was seventh on the IC Racing YZF-R1 while Derek Sheils, Derek McGee and Lee Johnston rounded out the top ten.

Tyco BMW’s Dan Kneen was second quickest in the Superstock class albeit some 2.6 seconds off pacesetter Hickman with Dean Harrison third.

Practice resumes tomorrow.
