Leaving it until the dying moments of the session to ditch the collection of riders attempting to tow him to a fast lap (with the help of fellow Moto3 racer and brother Darryn), the Red Bull KTM rider eventually put in a lap that left him 0.15 ahead of local Enea Bastianini.

Nicolo Bulega, who held the top spot for much of the session, rounds out the front row, ahead of an all-Honda second row of Jakub Kornfeil, faller Jorge Navarro and Aron Canet.
