Moto3 championship leader David Alonso will move up into the Moto2 class in 2025 as he continues his relationship with the Aspar team.

The Colombian currently holds a healthy 75-point lead in the lightweight class and is the favourite to claim the title after a sensational campaign. Alonso has topped the vast majority of sessions throughout the season and claimed seven victories from the opening 12 races.

This success comes in Alonso’s second Moto3 campaign, having finished his maiden season third overall. 2023 saw Alonso secure four race wins and a total of eight podiums as he finished 29 points behind Jaume Masia.

“I think it’s the perfect time to move up to Moto2,” Alonso said. “This year we are showing our strength and now, with this, the goal will be to jump to the intermediate category with the Moto3 title. I am proud to be able to take this step with the CFMOTO Aspar Team, it is more than a team for me, it is my second family.

“They trusted me at the end of 2017, in the Spanish Championship, when I was eleven years old, and together we have achieved everything. I want to continue growing with them and getting more successes.”

Confirmation of his move into the Moto2 class means that Alonso becomes the first rider to complete the Aspar team’s training ladder – Spanish Championship to Moto2. 2025 will mark Alonso’s eighth season of racing with Aspar having claimed his maiden title with the team in 2018 (Spanish 85GP).

Alonso went on to claim the European Talent Cup title in 2020 and the Red Bull Rookies Cup in 2021. Much like Pedro Acosta, Alonso is tipped for big things inside the MotoGP paddock in the next few years.

“David is the greatest exponent of the work we have been doing with the young riders in recent years and it is a joy to be able to say that next year he will be one of our riders in Moto2,” Aspar Team Owner, Jorge Martinez said.

“He has grown with us and is now at a very high level in Moto3. We hope to finish the year with the title and that he can make the jump to Moto2 as world champion.”

Alonso takes the Moto2 seat vacated by Jake Dixon following the announcement that the Brit will move to the Elf MarcVDS Racing team next year. Dixon is currently fifth in the championship but is the form man right now with four straight podiums, including two wins. Dixon is 43 points behind championship leader Sergio Garcia with eight races remaining.
