MotoGP: Simon Crafar to replace Freddie Spencer as Chairman of FIM Stewards Panel in 2025

Simon Crafar will take over from Freddie Spencer as the Chairman of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel next season.

Spencer has been in the role since 2019, leading a three-person panel which also includes Andres Somolinos and Tamara Matko. Both Somolinos and Matko will remain on the panel with Crafar in 2025.

Crafar has been working inside the MotoGP paddock as a journalist and commentator for Dorna’s world feed for several years. During his racing career, Crafar competed in the 500cc World Championship, 250cc World Championship, WorldSBK and BSB, whilst he was also crowned Malaysian Superbike Champion in 1991.

The New Zealander’s one and only 500cc victory came at Donington Park with Red Bull Yamaha, when he crossed the line with a staggering advantage of 11.530s over Mick Doohan.

“I’m really looking forward to taking on this new challenge,” Crafar said. “I did not take the decision lightly to make this change and accept this appointment, as it means leaving a role I’ve enjoyed a lot, but after seven years in MotoGP commentary I am ready for something new.

“I will approach this new position utilising my experience on and off the bike as rider, technician, coach and journalist, but more importantly with my love for our sport and respect for its competitors. I feel honoured to be trusted with this responsibility and to have been nominated for the role.”

The role itself is a tough one. Spencer and his team have come under fire from riders, teams, the media and fans in the last few years over controversial, inconsistent decisions. A lack of communication and explanation have also been cited as issues from the riders, as well as clarity over rules.

Crafar’s role in the paddock means he knows the majority of riders quite well and has worked with them on a weekly basis. His tech background also means he understands much more about the modern MotoGP machine and how they work out on the circuit, which could be crucial with some incidents.

He’s also been very clear when explaining his opinions on racing incidents, something that Crafar has never been afraid to do over the years.

“It’s been a pleasure to have been the first Chairman of the panel, and to have worked to put in place the incredible people and procedures we have now,” Spencer said. “When I was asked to be the Chairman, I accepted as I wanted to contribute to the sport and I’m proud of my tenure. I’m looking forward to some exciting projects in the future, and I know the team will be in great hands with Simon.”
