Moto3: Canet from Fenati on first day of action

1 of 1

Aron Canet has topped the first day of Moto3 action of 2019, ending up over half a second clear of pre-race favourite Romano Fenati after the day’s two sessions. Niccolo Antonelli, the first crasher of the season, was third, ahead of Andrea Migno and Gabriel Rodrigo – only five days after undergoing surgery for a broken collarbone.

British racer John McPhee only just missed out on making it directly through to Q2 in the class’ new qualifying format, coming home in 16th. With cooler track conditions aiding fast lap times this evening and with high winds forecast for tomorrow afternoon’s session, it could well be that he’ll be forced to fight it out for one of the four spaces in Q1 that will allow him to progress. Rookier Tom Booth-Amos ended his first day as a full-time Grand Prix racer in 27th.
