MotoGP: Marquez shrugs off high speed crash at Silverstone

Marc Marquez has shrugged off a high speed crash in free practice two for the British Grand Prix this afternoon, putting the huge highside aside to immediately return to the track and set a time good enough for fifth overall at the end of the day’s action.

The Repsol Honda rider was caught out by a cold tyre highside at Chapel on his out lap, landing heavily on his hip after the tumble and being forced to drag himself clear of the track – but shrugged it off after the session.

“It changed completely the plan of the practice, which was annoying, because the two bikes were set up very differently. But it was my own mistake – I saw that it was sunny at Silverstone and thought I could push from the first lap, but the tyres weren’t at the right temperature.

“If I crash I normally like to go back out on the track and be fast again right away, and that is what I did today. I got on the second bike as soon as possible, because then you forget about the crash – I was right back at the limit and pushing as soon as possible! It’s the way that I work.”

And losing out on much of his day’s plan both with the first crash and another one right at the end of the session, he admitted afterwards that he was angry with himself for the mistake.

“Of course I get angry with myself, not only because of the plan but because we’re fighting for a championship and we need to control the risk. I can understand the second crash because I was pushing and that’s normal, but the first one shows that I need to take care on cold tyres. Maybe it was extra confidence because I was feeling good, but I needed to consider that we’re at Silverstone with a hard rear tyre – it was sunny but not hot like other races!”
