Moto3: Textbook win for title leader Mir

Aron Mir has delivered a textbook victory at the Czech Grand Prix to extend his dominant Moto3 championship lead even further, picking his way through a wet but drying track to deliver a knockout blow to title rival Romano Fenati with a handful of laps remaining – and to defend his lead to the line.

Bo Bendsneyder and Juanfran Guevara were early leaders in the wet race, pulling out a lead at the front until the track started to dry out, with the title rivals managing to hunt them down and make their move with only a few laps to go, to give Mir his sixth win of the season.

“This victory means a lot for me. I was pushing really hard all week so that I could be able to dedicate a win to Angel Nieto, and it means a lot to be able to do that. It was difficult conditions and very hard to understand the rain tyres, so to come back like this is amazing.”

They were joined on the podium by Aron Canet, after a heroic ride from the Spanish teenager from 17th on the grid, charging through the pack to take third place with only a handful of laps remaining. Bendsneyder came home in fourth at the flag ahead of Guevara.

British Talent Honda rider John McPhee was sixth, after a charge of his own at the race he won last year. Qualifying 19th on the grid, he left himself with a lot of work to do, but was unable to improve or to follow Canet as he too came through the field.
