MotoGP: Alex Lowes to make GP debut as replacement for injured Smith

Alex Lowes will make his MotoGP debut this week at his home race at Silverstone on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 machine, as he wildcards to replace the injured Bradley Smith.

Smith was hurt last week during free practice for the Oschersleben 8 Hour, leaving himself with damage to the ligaments in his knee after a high-speed collision with another rider that also left him needing surgery for a puncture wound to his leg.

And after taking to the track for a short but successful test of the M1 machine at last week’s Brno test, a reward for his Suzuka 8 Hour success with Yamaha, Lowes was the natural successor to step in and replace the injured Smith – an opportunity he’s relishing.

“First of all, I just want to say how sorry I am to hear of Bradley’s injury. It sounds like he’s been extremely unlucky and I hope he gets well soon. With regards to me getting this opportunity, it goes without saying that it’s genuinely a dream come true. I’m sure that I’ll have to pinch myself on Sunday when I’m sitting on the starting grid with Rossi, Lorenzo and Marquez.

“However, I have no expectations at this point. I simply just want to learn as much as I can from everyone around me. I personally want to thank everyone at Yamaha and Tech3 for giving me this opportunity.”
