Dovi: Michelin tyres have a lot of potential

The potential of the Michelin tyres is very high according to Andrea Dovizioso but the knife edge nature of the tyres at the moment is making things very difficult for MotoGP riders.

“The bikes have been developed around Bridgestone tyres in recent years the ethos of how to set them up to get the best performance has been funnelled towards a certain setting. With the Michelin tyres so different in their nature compared to the Bridgestones Dovizioso said that it will take time to understand how to setup a bike correctly for the French rubber.

“We focused on the tyres today because it’s very important to understand the details for the Michelins so that we can understand the bikes for next year,” said Dovizioso. “The tyres are so different and I think that the tyre has a lot of potential but they are so different to what we used in the last few years. The riders will need to adapt to the new tyres  and adjust their riding but we need to  also change the bike and move the direction [of settings] towards the new tyres.

“It’s not easy and the change will be very big but it’s not easy to manage this but the potential is really good. It’s difficult to manage the movement that we have and when you lose the front it can happen very quickly and that’s one of the reasons why we saw so many crashes today.”

Dovizioso was tenth fastest today.
