Lorenzo quickest but times will tumble

The opening MotoGP session ended with a flurry with the majority field setting their fastest times at the end of the session. Jorge Lorenzo wound up with the fastest time but there’s little that can be read into these times with the track conditions set to improve over the course of the weekend.

Having been resurfaced prior to last year’s race the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is arguably the track with the greatest evolution over the course of the race weekend. The infield road course gets used sporadically through the season and it can be expected that the MotoGP bikes will find in the region of two seconds or more before qualifying.

Lorenzo’s performance this morning tough shows he’s ready to get back to business after the summer break. The Spaniard ended the session one tenth faster than Marc Marquez with Andrea Dovizioso rounding out the top three.

To illustrate the track conditions and the time difference between the softer Open class tyre and the rubber the Factory machines are using Mike di Meglio was ninth fastest.

Cal Crutchlow was seventh fastest but the LCR Honda rider stayed in the garage at the end of the session. Scott Redding was 13th fastest with Bradley Smith 16th.
