Indianapolis Moto3: Rins takes third win of the season

Estrella Galicia 0,0 rider Alex Rins has taken victory in the Moto3 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ahead of teammate Alex Marquez, as an injured Luis Salom finishes off the podium for the first time this season.

The start of the race was delayed with electrical problems affecting the start lights, but when it eventually got underway it was pole setter Rins who led off the line.

However, a mistake on the first lap ran him onto the grass and allowed Arthur Sissis to take over, leading Jack Miller for an unusual Australian one-two.

However, usual order was soon restored at the fron as the Spanish trio of Vinales, Marquez and Rins made it past the pair to take the podium spots. Injured championship leader Luis Salom was also able to move up to fifth after Miller crashed out on the third lap.

Rins was soon able to recover from his mistake and shoulder his way through into the lead, passing Vinales and Marquez but unable to pull a significant gap.

German Jonas Folger led the chasing wave, with Sissis and Salom behind. However, four seconds down on the leader, they were unable to pull in that gap.

Rins was able to hold his lead from teammate Marquez to the end, with the younger Marquez taking his first GP podium, ahead of Maverick Vinales.

Folger held fourth, while injured Salom was able to make it past teammate Sissis for fifth and sixth. The third of the KTM Red Bull Ajo machines, with Khairuddin onboard, was seventh, while Miguel Olivera was the first non-KTM on his Mahindra, ahead of Fenati, the first Honda.

John McPhee, battling a stomach bug all weekend, moved from 30th on the grid to finish 20th overall.

Lap three crasher Miller was confirmed with a broken collarbone after the race.

Rins said after the race: “It was a very difficult race. I went out of the track in the seocnd corner, and had to push very hard for a few laps, but the race was decided for me by the closing laps.”
