Australia 125: Cortese wins under red flag

Sandro Cortese secured his second win of the season when the Australian 125 race was red flagged with three laps remaining following Niklas Ajo crashing and requiring trackside attention.

A rain shower delayed the start of the race as teams were given the opportunity to change tyres, with a few riders swapping slicks for wets.

Alexis Masbou (Caretta Technology Forward Team) took the lead, before being displaced by Adrián Martín (Bankia Aspar) who soon pulled into the pits to change to slicks as the track dried.

Sandro Cortese (Intact Racing Team Germany) then gained the lead, Luis Salom (RW Racing GP) took second and Efrén Vázquez (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) challenged his team mate Zarco for third, despite Zarco being the only rider who could prevent Nicolas Terol (Bankia Aspar) from winning the championship.

Terol, who had dropped to seventeenth following a poor start, climbed through the pack and began to gain on the leaders when the red flag was shown and the final race results were determined by the order on the previous lap, resulting in Cortese winning, Luis Salom taking second and Zarco finishing in third.

Vázquez finished in fifth ahead of Alberto Moncayo (Team Andalucía Banca Cívica) and Nicolas Terol in sixth.

Despite making a strong recovery Terol’s lead has been reduced to 25 points over Zarco.
