Moto3 won’t be single engine, says race boss

MotoGP bosses have categorically denied plans to make the new Moto3 four-stroke class a single engine series to save costs.

The current 125cc two-strokes will be banished and replaced by a 250cc four-stroke single-cylinder world championship in 2012, as was exclusively revealed by MCN in May.

Moto3 was initially not expected to copy the successful single engine format currently used in the 600cc four-stroke Moto2 series, which features a controlled engine supplied by Honda.

But speculation has grown that plans for multi-brand engines would be abolished to avoid costs spiralling.

But Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta told MCN: “We are not talking about Moto3 being a single brand engine.”

The new Moto3 class will get final approval at a meeting of the Grand Prix Commission at the next race in Brno, Czech Republic.
