Bradley Smith refusing to get carried away

Bradley Smith has insisted he won’t get carried away by his stunning 2009 form.

The level-headed 18-year-old leads the world 125GP championship after two victories in the opening five races of the season heading into next weekend’s Catalunya clash near Barcelona.

Victories in Jerez and Mugello have given the Oxforshire teenager a 3.5-point cushion over Aspar Aprilia team-mate Julian Simon, and he’s now Britain’s most successful GP rider since Barry Sheene.

But Smith is not going to let his classy performances go to his head.

He told MCN: “It’s great to be leading the world championship, but I can’t get carried away with it. We’ve only had five races and at the moment I’m in contention and that’s the only thing I can do. It doesn’t mean anything at the moment. I’ve got to stay concentrated and if I can keep doing what I’m doing then I know I’m going to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.”
