Qatar MotoGP: Danny Webb 'shocked' with second

Danny Webb was pinching himself after he produced the major shock on the opening day of the 2008 season in Qatar.

The Aprilia rider claimed a stunning second place on the provisional 125 grid, finishing just 0.3secs adrift of fellow British rider Bradley Smith, who was fastest on a great opening to 2008 for British fans.

Danny Webb was startled with his performance and speaking exclusively to MCN tonight, he said: “I am pinching myself. I came across the line and it said 2:05.5 on my dash and I thought it must be wrong.

“The next lap it said P2 on my board and I thought, ‘crikey, it is real’. I’ve gone half-a-second underneath last year’s pole and I’m really happy with it.

“I’m surprised to be honest because on the last day of the IRTA test we had a few problems. “

Danny Webb said his tough rookie year in 2007 had taught him a lot heading into his second season on the world stage.

“I’ve come into this season with a clear head and the bike is so much better than last year,” said Webb, who has switched from Honda to Aprilia machinery.

“I’m also much fitter and more relaxed and taking a different approach.”

Danny Webb said his experience of trying to produce competitive performances on inferior machinery in 2007 had also helped following his winter switch to Aprilia.

And he thinks his improved performance is mirrored by in-form Bradley Smith, who also moved from Honda to Aprilia.

Webb added: “Bradley and I are riding good because last year we had to ride the Honda hard to bring us good results. This year that experience is helping us on a faster bike.”
