Casey Stoner takes pole at Laguna Seca, Toseland improves to fifth

Casey Stoner has taken pole position for the Laguna Seca round of the MotoGP world championship, while James Toseland improved to take fifth.

Stoner dominated the whole weekend and just proved his point in the qualifying session setting the second fastest lap of the weekend just 20 minutes in to the session.

But that wasn’t good enough for the Aussie as he went on to set the only lap under 1:21 all weekend, at 1:20.7, with still a minute and a half left on the clock. He then retired to the pits to watch his rivals final laps.

Valentino Rossi took himself to second place on the grid with six minutes to go with Nicky Hayden taking third on his final lap, followed by Jorge Lorenzo in fourth.

James Toseland, who had been struggling all weekend for grip from his Michelin tyres, managed to pull out a spectacular lap at the last minute to take fifth on the grid.

Colin Edwards had been in front of Toseland all weekend but he couldn’t quite match his final lap time and finished the session seventh on the grid behind Randy DePuniet.
