Bautista and De Angelis make it one-two for Aspar

Alvaro Bautista and Alex De Angelis have made it a Master Mapfre Aspar one-two in the 250 Grand Prix at Mugello.

The teammates had a few hairy moments with each other in the final stages but common sense overruled in the end for the pair to complete the 21 lap race just ahead of Hector Barbera to make in an all Aprilia podium, a repeat of the 125 race.

Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo had his lead in the championship cut to 27 points after crashing out on the final lap.

The Spaniard had been battling for the lead with Bautista and De Angelis but lost grip on the Astro Turf at the side of the track after coming together with Bautista. He did get his Aprilia started again to finish eighth.

The front runners competing for the tops spots throughout the race came from Bautista and Dovioso in the early stages, although it was Switzerland’s Thomas Luthi who made it to the first corner in the lead.

But Barbera was the man on a mission after starting from sixth. He claimed two fastest laps on two consecutive laps recording a 1:58.1 and 1:57.9 to catch the top riders. He then made a claim for first and got it on lap eight.

But with a determined Bautista on his exhaust pipe it was only a matter of time before he slipped back again.

But thanks to Lorenzo’s final lap crash, he benefited by taking the final podium spot.

Ireland’s Eugene Laverty celebrated his 21st birthday by finishing in 20th place on his Honda.

World Supersport winner from Silverstone, Anthony West, secured 10th place in the 250s today.
