Rossi deal no suprise

Colin Edwards said he wasn’t surprised that team-mate Valentino Rossi signed a new contract with Yamaha that will keep him in the MotoGP world championship until at least the end of 2008.
Yamaha’s recent announcement that Rossi had agreed terms on a multi-million pound extension ended rumours that he would quit MotoGP at the end of this year to move to the world rally championship.
Double World Superbike champion Edwards said: “Anybody with Valentino’s record, I mean shit, sign him as early as you can and for as long as you can. I think it’s funny.
“My dad and I always have these little side bets and my dad said ‘you know, I bet Valentino goes and drives cars in ’08. I was like ‘dude you’re smoking crack, there is no way.’
“My whole opinion is that we all know that Valentino is real energetic and he has fun with anything. He loves any motorsport and his ability to drive anything with wheels he just uses it to go play every now and then. As far as career commitment I don’t see it.“
Edwards said it was a massive boost for Yamaha to have signed Rossi for the next two years as the Japanese factory seeks to regain the premier class crown. He added: “It’s great for them. Until they do sign him there’s a lot of effort to make sure he is happy and that he stays.”
