Rossi takes fifth in a row

Valentino Rossi has taken yet another win at Phillip Island, taking his tally at the circuit to five wins in a row.

The newly crowned World Champion dominated the race, holding back Honda rider Nicky Hayden to take his eleventh win this season and hand Yamaha the constructors championship in its 50th anniversary year.

Hayden started from pole and initially lead the race but Rossi quickly took control, only allowing Hayden a brief return to the front in the middle of the race.

Hayden also had to contend with fellow Honda rider Marco Melandri who passed him several times for second place, but Melandri couldn’t keep up the pace and ended up scrapping with Carlos Checa’s Ducati for third, just losing out to the Ducati’s acceleration on the finish straight, leaving Checa on the podium.

World Superbike rider Chris Vermeulen took an impressive 11th on his first time on a MotoGP machine. The Australian took the Camel Honda to finish just behind of the factory Suzuki of John Hopkins, and in front of Ruben Xaus and Roberto Rolfo.

Verneulen’s team-mate Alex Barros lost the front while in sixth place sliding at speed across the grass and cart wheeling in to the air as he hit the raised gravel trap ribs first.

Dani Pedrosa has won the 250cc title, following the retirement of challenger Casey Stoner early in the race.

In the 125cc championship, Thomas Luthi has regained the championship lead.
