Valentino Rossi has gone quickest in the second free practice session at Phillip Island as Loris Capirossi and Kenny Roberts crash out of the weekend.

Rossi posted a time of 1:30.349 over 28 laps to take the top spot from Ducati’s Carlos Checa (1:30.619) and Repsol Honda’s Nicky Hayden (1:31.016).

Replacement rider Chris Vermeulen on the Camel Honda managed 14th in the second session with 1:33.178, and Britian’s James Ellison was 17th quickest with 1:34.456.

The field is down to 18 riders for the race. Kenny Roberts fractured his left wrist in a crash at the Doohan curve, almost immediately followed by an identical crash by Loris Capirossi. The Italian was hopeful to return until further tests revealed internal bleeding.
