BMW ends race series

BMW has announced this will be the last season of the BoxerCup.

The flat-twins have delivered close, exciting racing as part of the MotoGP tour. Two road-replica models have been available in limited editions. The series has been running since 1999.

“It was clear right from the start that a brand cup has a limited time span,“ said BMW motorsports director, Berthold Hauser. We have achieved all our objectives. We have shown how fast the R1100 S can go on the racetrack and have proved the sports-oriented side of our brand to a wider public.“

Thomas Hinterreiter is leading the 2004 title charge with Markus Barth and Stephane Mertens battling for second and third.

The BoxerCup will end in its fourth international year on 30 October in Valencia where the race will once again support the Spanish MotoGP (the next race is at Brno in the Czech Republic on August 22.
