Loris Capirossi clocked a record-setting 203.9mph and set the fastest lap at the weekends IRTA tests in Catalunya.

For a full report on the weekend’s activity, see this week’s issue of MCN, out March 19.

Capirossi set the time of 1:43.63 and won a BMW car in the process.

Both his best lap and the speed record were set on his second bike after a broken oil line caused him to crash his No 1 machine.

A new engine and updated suspension settings on Tohru Ukawa’s Honda enabled him to take the second fastest lap with a time of 1:43.83.

Alex Barros was third fastest on the Yamaha M1 with a time of 1:43.878.

Reigning champion Valentino Rossi was down in fifth.
