Gibernau triumphs over Rossi in Germany

1 of 1

Sete Gibernau celebrated victory at the Sachsenring circuit in Germany after a race long battle with Valentino Rossi.

Rossi and Gibernau both made a clean break from the pack, with the reigning champion holding a 3-second advantage. The gap slowly closed, until finally Gibernau not only took the lead, but was able to successfully defend his position across the line. Rossi was seething after making a mistake on the final corner, running wide, and dashing any hopes of winning the drag race to the line.

Tory Bayliss benefitted from an early exit for Max Biaggi, after the Italian went from pole to tenth at the start. Biaggi had recovered to third, when he slid off into a gravel trap.

Other retirements included Marco Melandri, who crashed out of a possible top-four finish, Nori Haga, Alex Barros and John Hopkins.
