BSB: Buchan to 'play it smart' in Showdown hunt

Danny Buchan has said he plans to ‘play it smart’ at this weekend’s Bennetts British Superbike Showdown decider.

The FS-3 Racing Kawasaki rider is just seven points off at Showdown spot after a tough couple of rounds at Thruxton and Cadwell saw him fail to score points in three of the last four races with two of those through no fault of his own.

However, the twice National Superstock champion is confident of securing a spot in the all-important top six across this weekend’s three races at Silverstone.

“I’ve given myself a bit of work to do after throwing it down the road at Cadwell but it’s only seven points, so over three races it’s more than do-able,” he told MCN.

“Shakey went into the final round last year 33-points behind Haslam and he won the championship over three races, so that shows what is possible.

“I am going to play it smart. I have been in this position before and I have had the pressure when I have been fighting for the title in Superstock where you have a really important race and I think I perform in those circumstances. I always say to Jake you either sink or swim and to me I am a swimmer!”

After the cancellation of the 2018 British Grand Prix, BSB bosses made plans to use Silverstone’s national circuit instead of the Grand Prix layout – a decision Buchan thinks will play out in his favour.

“The switch to the national circuit might help me a bit as I struggle with my size a little on the big long straights at Silverstone. That makes my life easier but it’ll bring the racing much closer together.”
