BSB: Laverty: 'We need to be fighting for podiums'

Michael Laverty has admitted he needs to be fighting for podiums in the next two rounds of the MCE British Superbike Championship if he’s to secure a place in the three round showdown.

As the season approaches its half way point, Laverty currently sits eight points outside the all-important top six spots, but after a return to the podium last time out at Snetterton, he is confident of pushing towards the front at two circuits he’s hoping will suit the Tyco BMW.

The Northern Irishman has endured a tough season since taking victory in the opening race at Silverstone, but a positive end to the Snetterton round has fired him up ahead of the weekend’s action.

“I am looking forward to Thruxton now because I feel that the Tyco BMW will be so much better there this year compared to last season,” he said. “We know we have the pace and at this stage of the season we need to be bagging those big points hauls for the Showdown. We need to be fighting for podiums and I think we can be up there fighting with Shakey and Leon.

“I don’t feel like anyone is head and shoulders above the rest week in, week out, right now. You only have to look at the points to try and be in the top six for the Showdown – it has never been closer to be in the top six since it was first introduced and that is why this stage of the season now is so important. I think Thruxton and then Brands Hatch GP will both be good circuits for us, which should be our opportunity to really push for the top six because I don’t want a repeat of last season where it went down to the final round before the Showdown to confirm my place.”
