BSB: Tyre issues hamper Byrne in second Cadwell race

Shane Byrne left Cadwell Park on Monday evening with a smile on his face after clinching his first victory at the Lincolnshire circuit since 2003 with Monstermob Ducati. 

While JG Speedfit Kawasaki rival Leon Haslam walked away with more points than Byrne, the four-time British Champion wasn’t too worried about his rival’s form having suffered with what he suspects might have been a faulty Pirelli rear tyre in the second race. 

Byrne was able to take advantage of Haslam’s late tyre struggles in the opening race to pull a crafty move at Chris Curve on the final lap, but the second race would be a different story for the Be Wiser Ducati man as tyre woes of his own meant he could do no better than third.

“If you look at my tyre compared to my team-mate’s or any of the other tyres I’ve used this weekend we’ve never had tyre wear like that,” he told MCN, pointing at the worn Pirelli SC0 in the back of his bike.

“The first race was probably the most controlled, enjoyable ride I’ve ever had at Cadwell Park. I never felt I had to go to the limit because everybody else was trying to preserve their tyres. I never had to push myself, or take any risks and because of that I asked the guys not to change the bike for race two. 

“If you look at my results at Cadwell Park over the last few years a first and third is an absolutely amazing weekend for us so I’m happy, but race two certainly bit me in the arse a bit after the controlled race one! The bike was exactly the same so it had to have been the tyre.”
