Byrne looking to add King of the Mountain to his titles

Monster Energy have commissioned a second special award for this weekend’s MCE British Superbike round at Cadwell Park, with the King of the Mountain trophy joining the newly reinstated King of Brands Hatch awarded by the enerrgy drink at the July round of the series at the Kent circuit.

To be awarded to the best combined finisher from Sunday’s two races, Shane Byrne will be looking to add the especially commissioned trophy to his collection alongside the Brands Hatch award he won less than a month ago.

The triple champion, though, is currently in the middle of a run of bad form that’s now seen him go three rounds without a win. To compound the problem, he hasn’t won at the Lincolnshire circuit since 2003.

However, he remains confident going into this weekend’s action at Cadwell, saying that both he and his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki team know what went wrong last time out at Oulton park.

Byrne said: “The last round at Oulton Park was more difficult than anticipated due to a training injury. The team gave me a package good enough to win, but I suffered more there than many people will ever realise. However, three podiums at a track as physical as Oulton Park while injured, all things considered, was a good weekend.

“Looking ahead now though, I’m really looking forward to the upcoming races. We’re working really hard as a team to improve our package as there have certainly been some big improvements from some of our competitors. I’m going to be trying as hard as ever to reward my guys’ hard work with a good few more trips to the top of the podium – that’s the plan anyway!”

The weekend will also see Monster-sponsored Rallycross star and X Games medallist Liam Doran taking to the track for a series of demo laps in his 6000bph Citroen DS3. Doran’s laps are currently scheduled for Sunday, following the British Supersport sprint race.
