Is Leon Haslam your 2018 MCN Racer of the Year?

1 of 1

After another epic season of racing, MCN’s sports team of Michael Guy (Sports Editor), Simon Patterson (MotoGP reporter) and Oli Rushby (Superbike reporter) sat down to discuss who impressed them the most in each race series we cover – and to whittle down a shortlist of exactly who was the most impressive racers of the season.

With that in mind, we’ve came up with a list of seven – but we need your help to cut that down to award the 59th running of our Racer of the Year award!

Leon Haslam

For years, Leon Haslam’s CV has been missing one crucial item in the form of a championship victory. A regular race winner in World Superbikes, a points-scorer in the 500cc days of Grand Prix racing and three times a runner-up in the Bennetts British Superbike series, he finally got the monkey off his back in 2018 with an outstanding win.

And while there was a certain expectation on him to win, especially after 2017 rival Shane Byrne was ruled out due to injury early in the year, that doesn’t in any way demean from Haslam’s incredible year as he not only won but dominated the domestic series.

Taking an incredible 15 race wins – and leaving the entire field to take only nine more behind him – even the Showdown format was barely enough to prevent the 35-year-old from winning as he became the first person to win the crown in the opening race of the traditional Brands Hatch triple-header season finale.
