Supercross: Roczen doubles up in San Diego

Honda racer Ken Roczen has doubled up in the second round of the 2017 AMA Sueprcross series, making it two wins from two in San Diego as Red Bull KTM duo of Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin took second and third for the second week in a row.

The first half of the race played out much the same as it did last week in Anaheim, with the German pulling out an early lead. However, backmarker traffic allowed defending champion Dungey to close him down – only for an uncharacteristic mistake to cost him the race with only a few laps to go, in a scrap that Roczen enjoyed.

“Ryan kept me on my toes. The track broke down and it was really rough out there, but that’s the fun part. I hope the fans enjoyed it. That’s what they want to see – a battle for the win. I’m actually happier with this weekend’s win than last weekend’s. I’m happy to be up here again. Another day in the books and I’m looking forward to next weekend.”

Taking his 90th career podium in second, Dungey admitted afterwards that there was really nothing else he could have done – but that he had to take the risk for the win despite it not paying off.

“I had two spots where I thought I could make the pass and I made a mistake before each of them. I came in too hot into one of the corners. I knew it was the last lap and I was trying hard. We fought to the end. It was an intense race. It was good because I led a little bit and then he led. We were really pushing the pace and if you’re going to race someone like that, it’s going to be a battle to the end.”

The series continues next weekend with the second visit to Anaheim’s Angels Stadium in three weeks.
