Dungey cements championship lead with Daytona win

1 of 4

Championship leader Ryan Dungey has cemented his lead in the AMA Supercross series after taking his first ever victory at the Daytona International Speedway.

The Red Bull KTM rider launched off the line in third, behind fellow KTM rider Andrew Short, before banging bars with Cole Seeley to move into second, then hunting down Short, passing him and pulling out a ten second lead by the half-way point of the twenty lap race.

Speaking afterwards, Dungey said: “It feels good to get my first-ever Daytona win. The bigger picture is obviously focusing on the championship, but to get the win feels even better. We had to do a lot changes to the bike prior to this race since it is different than normal Supercross racing and all of the changes were for the good. My bike worked great and I am happy to take this win.”

Honda rider Eli Tomac was second, while Blake Baggett took third on the Suzuki. However, it was a bad night for championship early leader Ken Roczen, further exacerbating ankle injuries in practice that forced him to sit out the night.
