FIM World Motocross Grand Prix comes to Mallory Park

Thousands of dirt-biking aficionados will be heading to Mallory Park this weekend (May 31-June 1) for the British Motocross Grand Prix as the circuit debuts as a World Motocross Championship venue.

A brand-new track has been handcrafted by organisers RHL, and promises good racing no matter what the weather with wide and fast, off-camber turns; spectacular jumps and hairpins tailor-made to create multiple lines and allow passing.

The layout has been designed for the spectators to see as much of the action as possible.

For the British fans, there’ll be a strong contingent of British Championship regulars aiming to score Grand Prix points and the chiefs among them have to be Tommy Searle and Billy Mackenzie.

For Mackenzie, the British Grand Prix is a chance to kick-start a disappointing beginning to the season, hopefully converting his blistering pace into some good finishes, whereas, for Searle, it will be another step in his fight for the World MX2 crown.

Searle is currently third in the standings and the young Brit could go top with a good result in front of his home fans.

But it’s not just about the dynamic duo Mackenzie and Searle, there’s a vast swath of British GP regulars and wildcard entries – Stephen Sword, James Noble, Mark Jones, Tom Church, Shaun Simpson, Carl Nunn, Elliot Banks-Browne, Jake Nichols, Jason Dougan, Martin Barr, Jamie Smith, Brad Anderson, Kristian Whatley, Mel Pocock, Ashley Greedy, Ray Rowson and Lewis Gregory will all be hoping to give the crowd something to cheer about.

And for fans of a slightly earlier era, Dave Thorpe will be hoping to strengthen the defence of his World Veteran’s crown. The three time 500cc World Champion will be joined by fellow British Vets Greg Hanson (who won the Spanish round), Scott Eastwood, Alan Magee, Mark Silvester, Terry House and Richard Main.

Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely that Thorpe will be on his 1986 works Honda RC500.

As well as some red-hot racing action, there’ll also be funfairs, live music, static displays and a parade of British Motocross Legends before the racing gets underway.
The on-track action will start with practice sessions on Saturday morning, before qualifying races in the afternoon. There’ll be warm ups on Sunday morning, before the Grand Prix races begin at 11am.
