MX1: Steve Ramon secures title at final round in Holland

Suzuki’s Steve Ramon wrapped up the MX1 championship at the last round in Lierop, Holland this weekend with a podium in both races in front of 36,000 people.

Main title rival Yamaha’s Joshua Coppins was unable to race after failing to recover from his shoulder injury which gave Ramon the perfect opportunity to secure the title with a second in race one and a third in race two on his RM-Z450.

And with Steve Ramon’s teammate, Kevin Strijbos securing a win and a second place the pair secured Suzuki the manufacturer’s title too.

This was the first time

Speaking after taking the title, Steve Ramon said:  “I was really happy to see all the people at the finish-line.
“I knew what to expect after my previous world MX2 title, but it is a great feeling; that moment when it hits you ‘I’m World Champion”.

Kavin Strijbos rounded off a near perfect season for Suzuki as he finished second in the championship 33 points down on Ramon.

But Strijbos did not have it all his own way with Yamaha’s Marc de Reuver giving him a run for his money throughout the two races with de Reuver taking the lead on the last lap of race two and the victory at his home race.

Britain’s Billy Mackenzie completed the season in ninth with two fifth places on the sandy track in Holland. Mackenzie crashed out of fourth place in race two but was able to restart in seventh place and fought back to climb two places before the finish line.
