Former World Trials champion Dougie Lampkin left the Sheffield International Indoor Trail empty-handed and ‘gutted’ in fourth place overall after leading the event for much of the evening.

Lampkin, an eight-times winner at Sheffield in the past 12 years led the event in the first two legs of the competition until three ‘fives’ in the final three stages including  heavy fall dropped him out of contention.

He said: “I’m absolutely gutted. I just can’t get my head around how I ended up fourth when I was leading with three sections to go.

“I felt really good out there and the way things were going I really thought it could have been my night. One minute Adam (Raga) and I are battling for the victory, the next thing we are handing it to (Antonio) Bou.

“Not only am I disappointed for myself, but also for all my fans who were absolutely brilliant tonight.”

The event was won by Spaniard Antonio Bou on a Beta from Gas-Gas rider and fellow Spaniard Raga. Lampkin’s Montesa HRC Japanese teammate Takahasi Fujinami was third.

The only other Brit in the competition, James Dabill finished sixth in his final ride on a Beta. He switches to the Future TRW Montesa team for this season.
