Everts close to 10th title

Stefan Everts is almost certain to take his tenth MX world championship at round 12 at Namur on August 6, 2006, having taken another victory at the Grand Prix of Czech Republic.

Everts qualified in second position at the Loket circuit, but took the lead on the first lap of the first moto on the Yamaha Inter Sports bike. Josh Coppins had taken the holeshot and kept within two seconds of everts for much of the race, but could not mount a challenge and eventually faded, with Jonathan Barragan third.

The second moto saw Barragan and Kevin Strijbos lead the early stages, until Everts was able to take the lead, to finished from Strijbos and Coppins. It was Evert’s 98th overal Grand prix win, giving him a 149 point lead in the championship. To take his tenth championship and sixth successive title with yamaha, the Belgian just needs to finish the Namur round with one point over closest rival Kevin Strijbos.

In the MX2 class, Tyla Rattray took the first moto from David Philippaerts and Britain’s Carl Nunn. Fellow Brit Tommy Searle was fifth, having signed for KTM in a two-year MX2 deal at the weekend. Tom Church was 15th with Jason Dougan 17th.

The second MX2 race saw Antonio Cairoli win from Christophe Pourcel and Philippaerts. Carl Nunn was fifth, Billy Mackenzie sixth, and Tommy Searle seventh.Tom Church was 20th.

Pourcel leads the championship on 416 points from Cairoli on 382 and Philippaerts on 371. Top Brit is Carl Nunn on 277, from Tommy Searle on 254 and Bully Mackenzie on 246.
