Kids club needs your help

The Burton and District Sporting Motorcycle Club is looking for support with the news that the local council won’t rent them land after 10 years at the same site.

The ACU-affiliated voluntary club is dedicated to training anyone over the age of six years in off road sports including basic training, grasstrack, speedway, motocross and enduro riding. It currently has around 140 members aged from six to 70 years of age, and all coaches and maintenance staff are volunteers.

For the past 10 years, the club has hired land at the Shobhall Leisure complex, and claims to have invested over £10,000 in the facilities.

However, the local council has said that the land, originally an artifical football and hockey pitch, was only ever offered on a temporary basis, and that it was always the understanding that the land was part of plans for future development.

“What we will do is sit down and see if there are any alternatives,” said Culture and Community Services manager Mark Thornewill. “It’s probably not the best location anyway as it’s close to residential areas, and the dust from the bikes can be a problem for other users of the facilities. We’re keen to develop all sports in the area, and there’s great demand for sports like hockey and football, and also a BMX track or skatepark. At the moment we are looking around for an alternative site that the club could use”

Anyone wishing to discuss the plans, or show support for the club, particularly local residents, should email mark.thornewill@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk (click here), or send letters to Mark Thornewill, Midlands Grain Warehouse, Dervy St, Burton-Upon-Trent, Staffs, DE65 5JH.
