Smart and Lavilla win

1 of 1

The second round of the the British Superbike championship ended in spectacular fashion with two crash strewn races after the weather turned sour – and a race two win for Vivaldi’s Scott Smart.

The first race saw a massive crash on lap one when Virgin Yamaha rider Tommy Hill highsided on the inside of a bunch of riders, taking out Glen Richards, Johnny Kirkham, Chris Martin and Kieran Clarke in the process.

When the race continued it was Ducati rider Gregorio Lavilla and Honda’s Ryuichi Kiyonari that disappeared into the distance – with Lavilla taking the win after red flags were raised when it started to rain on lap 13.

Race two started wet and was littered with crashes as riders pushed to make up points lost in the eventful race one.

Smart defied the tipsters to take the win on the Vivaldi Suzuki, holding off Ducati rider Leon Haslam. Haslam nicked second from Lavilla on the final lap with the defending champ taking the safe option when the cold of a rain-soaked English April numbed his fingers.

Rizla Suzuki rider Shane Byrne was forced to sit out the race after crashing his spare bike on the out lap before the race. His first bike was damaged on the final wet lap of the first race.

Kiyonari looked set to spend some more time at the front but shortly after taking the lead he lost the front on the wet track and slid out.

BSB Qualifying: Gregorio Lavilla was on pole for Donington Park BSB, topping a mixed Honda/Ducati front row.

Lavilla and his team-mate Leon Haslam took first and third places on the grid while Karl Harris took his works Honda to second place with former works rider Michael Rutter, now riding for Stobart Honda, in fourth.

Rutter’s former team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari heads the second row ahead of Jonny Rea, Michael Laverty and James Hayden.

Rea will be disappointed with his placing after topping the time sheets all weekend while the Rizla Suzuki team will be starting to worry, with 8th and 9th place starts for Haydon and Shane Byrne despite some last minute Spanish testing during the week.
