Kiyonari Thruxton double

1 of 1

Ryuichi Kiyonari dominates the British Superbike Championship after a double win at the second round at Thruxton in Hampshire.

The Japanese rider adds these wins to his double victory at the opening round at Brands Hatch, and overcame an ankle injury from a 140mph crash in qualifying to put his stamp on proceedings.

Find out why Gregorio Lavilla’s here to stay – even when James Haydon returns from injury – in our full behind-the-scenes Thruxton report – only in MCN out on Wednesday.

Until then – here’s how it happened over the weekend…

Race Two:

Kiyonari benefitted from an early lead to give himself an easier time than in race one, stretching a small lead over team-mate Michael Rutter in the early laps, but Airwaves Ducati rider Gregorio Lavilla soon split the HM Plant Hondas before moving on to Kiyonari’s rear tyre until the finish line.

There was more drama with the safety car being brought out due to an accident on lap ten, and the Rizla Suzuki team had a dismal race with Scott Smart suffering engine failure one lap later. Reigning champion John Reynolds also retired, having started the race from pit lane due to problems with his number one bike.

Race One:

Race One saw Kiyonari move up from fifth on the grid, passing Glen Richards on the opening lap. Early leader Sean Emmett led Michael Rutter and Karl Harris, until Kiyonari capitalised on his greater speed and passing all three.

Rutter settled for second after an attempt on his Japanese team-mate saw him almost lose the front, while Gregorio Lavilla came out best of a battle between Leon Haslam, Karl Harris, Sean Emmett, Dean Thomas, Glen Richards and Scott Smart.

Supersport:

Leon Camier took the win from former champion Stuart Easton and Brands winner Jay Vincent. Craig Jones and Kieran Murphy rounded out the top five. Honda riders Rob Frost and Eugene Laverty both retired early on and Buff/Shark kawasaki team-mates Paul Seward and Phil Seton both retired on lap 15.
