Dave Hewson, Cadwell Park, May 11

A gritty ride by Branston rider Dave Hewson produced his best result of the season with a 13th place finish in the third round of the MRO Supersport 600 race at Cadwell on Sunday. The result came after a remarkable recovery from a first corner incident, which left him trailing dead last at the back of the field.

Morning qualifying saw Hewson power his way through for a fourth row start to Sunday’s 14-lap race but he failed to build on this when he was slow off the line. Pulling a wheelie as he squirted the power on he lost places as the 40 or so riders headed off towards Coppice for the first time.

Hewson decided to take the outside line in a bid to pick up places but didn’t bank on a rider ahead doing the same and was forced wide. He ran across the grass before re-joining the race over 200 yards behind the pack.

As the laps ticked by Hewson latched onto the back of the stragglers and moved ahead passing four riders in one brave move until he found himself in 28th place and a substantial gap to make up to get in touch with the next wave of back markers.

This he did with determination and he moved through from 28th to 20th in the space of six laps. Hewson then set about closing the gap between himself and the midfielders and by the penultimate lap was mixing it with the group and up to 15th position.

He kept his cool and powered the Yamaha R6 through to 11th place on the penultimate lap but the red flag came out for an incident further up the field and the result declared on lap 13 giving Hewson a finish of 13th place and his first three championship points.

” Considering the bad start and then being run off onto the grass I am really pleased with my finish. ” said Dave. ” It was the hardest Sunday afternoon’s work I have done for a long time! It is a shame I got tangled up at Coppice but if I hadn’t run across the grass there would have been a coming together and that would have been the end of my race. But for that I would maybe have been looking at a top ten position and I have to be pleased with that. ”
