Reed takes two in two weeks

Chad Reed has capitalised on a mistake by reigning champion Ricky Carmichael to take his second win in two weeks at Sunday’s AMA Supercross round in Houston, Texas.

In the 250cc final, Honda’s Carmichael ran into chaos at the first corner, dropping down the field, and almost into last place.

By contrast Reed has got away cleanly and was able to take the lead from Honda’s Larry Ward on lap nine. Carmichael had moved into second two laps later, and started to close on the Yamaha rider. Despite the gap closing from 4.874 seconds to 1.825, Reed was able to hang on for the win, with the only remaining factory rider, Carmichael’s teammate Ernesto Fonseca, in third.

Carmichael still leads the championship, by 279 points, to Reed’s 260.

In the 125cc race, victory went to Yamaha’s Brock Sellards. Taking the lead on the second lap, Sellards went on to win by a margin of 6.494 seconds.

Teammate Ivan Tedesco made it a one-two for the team, with KTM’s Brett Metcalfe taking third. Metcalfe made the third step of the podium by just half a wheel, with current championship leader Branden Jesseman taking fourth after an early fall.

Jesseman now leads on 135 points, from Mike Brown on 123, and Sellard on 118, with only one race remaining.
